When is an MOT test required?

MOT tests are required annually when most cars, vans, motorcycles, trucks or any other vehicle is three years old (four in NI). You need a valid MOT to use your vehicle on a public road (or anything defined as a 'road' in the Road Traffic Act 1988).

You can easily find out when a vehicle's MOT test is due using the registration number to check online.

Different rules apply to ambulances, taxis and private passenger carrying vehicles, which will need their first test one year after they were registered.

How much is an MOT test?

Most car drivers will pay no more than £54.85 ex VAT for an MOT test. This is the maximum amount that can be charged to test a class 4 vehicle (excluding VAT), but some garages will charge less.

Different charges apply to motorcycles, three wheeled cars and vehicles with 9 or more seats.

You can find out the maximum cost of your MOT test online. Contact the test centre directly to find out whether they will charge you less.
