When is an MOT test required?

MOT tests are required annually when most cars, vans, motorcycles, trucks or any other vehicle is three years old (four in NI). You need a valid MOT to use your vehicle on a public road (or anything defined as a 'road' in the Road Traffic Act 1988).

How much is an MOT test?

Most car drivers will pay no more than £54.85 ex VAT for an MOT test. This is the maximum amount that can be charged to test a class 4 vehicle (excluding VAT), but some garages will charge less.

Different charges apply to motorcycles, three wheeled cars and vehicles with 9 or more seats.
